WHY WERE PYRAMIDS SO IMPORTANT FOR THE PHARAOHS RELIGIOUS LIFE?
The pyramids were built to protect the Pharaoh's dead body. These massive tombs were made to last forever. The Pharaoh's death was very important. The ancient Egyptians believed that the pyramids would help them get to the after life
To get to the afterlife the Pharaohs would have to go through the mummification process:
First the body was washed, then they cut out the liver, the lungs and finally the stomach. These were all removed, but the heart was left so it remain with the body in the after life. Next a hook was used to pull the brain out and it was then discarded, as the brain was considered to be important. They would then rub the body with oil, and rapped the body in linen bandages. The body was rapped with 20 layers of these bandages, and this procedure took 15-20 days. The body was then put in a decorated coffin and placed in a pyramid. Whatever was placed with the mummified Pharaoh would go to the after life with them, including their pets.
All this effort and expense showed how important the after life was for the ancient Egyptians.
